Historical overview

Board of Directors

The Association for Independent Living (AVI) is a nonprofit association created in 2007 by Medical Mutual and Mutuam to promote the use of supporting products and technology to improve the quality of life of disabled people with dependence and elderly.
The idea of creating the Center for Independent Living (hereinafter CVI) emerged in the late 2006 by a group of professionals with extensive experience in the field of care for people with disabilities. On April 17, 2007, Medical Mutual and Mutuam formed the Association for Independent Living, which supported the project. Around this organization they put together an interdisciplinary technical team to outline the center's needs.
In October 2006, the constitutional bases of the CVI where defined. On July 24, 2007 the Association for Independent Living signed a collaboration agreement with the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. With the signing of the agreement a partnership was also established between the AVI and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) to promote activities and projects to help improve accessibility, social inclusion and independent living of all people.
The CVI has a research laboratory where they develop applied assistance and support for the elderly and it’s coordinated by the Head of the Accessibility Department at the UPC. On June 2, 2008 the CVI was inaugurated. The Association for Independent Living is affiliated to ECOM, which is a link between several associations related to the world of disabilities and handicaps.

At the General Assembly of the Association on 24th of February 2015 Dr. Ma. Asunción Torrents Fernández was elected as the new president of the AVI. It was also decided to include entities for the elderly in the field of disability and to incorporate individuals.
